• Harari primarily presents an hypothesis as to how Homo sapiens who successfully migrated out of Africa circa 70 kya (thousand years ago) and thereafter, successfully dominating the planet, differed from earlier Homo sapiens who attempted out migration previously (e.g. around 130 kya) but were not successful. Keep in mind that Homo neanderthals in Europe and Homo erectus in Asia had climate and environment adaptations that sapiens did not have and were separate species. Harari claims (assumes) that the later sapiens differed from the earlier sapiens in only one way. They had evolved the ability to form an "inter-subjective reality," as opposed to objective reality (physical) or subjective reality (in only one person's mind). They were able to tell stories and believe them, independent of physical reality.
  
  Everything from myth to religion to nations to moral codes to money are inter-subjective realities according to Harari. They have force in the physical world as long as people believe them, and cease to exist the moment people no longer believe them. This explains how people could cooperate in groups larger than 150, giving them a military and security advantage, and encouraging specialization which eventually gave them a technological advantage.
  
  Moreover, Harari claims (assumes) all these later sapiens were genetically identical, and that the variations in societies are purely cultural, i.e. inter-subjective realities. He presents history as an erratic evolution toward global unity, which is essentially demanded by the nature of inter-subjective realities, requiring belief of all those in mutual frequent contact, but he doesn't say how.
  
  In fact, Harari presents only anecdotal evidence for his claim. He presents no empirical studies regarding the flexibility of humans toward inter-subjective realities, and no mathematical models of its development, evolutionary advantage, or stability. He describes the scientific method as an important development, and requires it to include both mathematical models and verification of them. But he does not use either in his treatise. Thus he presents an important and interesting hypothesis, but not in a scientific manner. He makes not even suggestions as to how to further formulate or verify it as a scientific theory. Perhaps he is trapped in the inter-subjective reality of history as liberal arts, not science.
  
  The term "intersubjective" does exist in the literature of psychology and philosophy, primarily as a synonym for "agreement," but there is no agreement about its definition (Gillespie and Cornish 2009, Journal for Theory of Social Behavior) state
  
  "The concept of intersubjectivity is used widely, but with varying meanings. Broadly speaking, we take intersubjectivity to refer to the variety of possible relations between people’s perspectives. If we take social life to be founded on interactions then intersubjectivity should be a core concept for the social sciences in general and understanding social behaviour in particular. Perhaps because of this broad relevancy research has been fragmented and at least six definitions are in circulation. Most simplistically, intersubjectivity has been used
  to refer to agreement in the sense of having a shared definition of an object."
  
  The biggest complaint I have about Harari is that he does not distinguish between his opinion and facts, nor explain the background of how he arrived at the theory of inter-subjectivity. The study of the evolution of cooperation is a hot topic, with political scientists, biologists, mathematicians and even physicists all having theories, and much data collected and many math models developed. It is apparent Harari is aware of this, but does not tell us how his theory fits in. I can only conclude he finds his powers of popular persuasion greater than his powers of scientific persuasion and critical analysis, so he writes a long book instead of a focused research paper.
  
  By the way, you can find excellent video summaries and reviews of this book on the web, and even a "summary" for sale as an eBook. I originally got interested from the video summary.
  
  Near the end Harari reports on happiness research. In this section of the book he takes exception to his usual approach, giving us descriptions of studies and names of researchers so we can trace where these conclusions come from. The book is worth reading for this section.
  
  Occasionally Harari gets facts wrong. You won't realize this unless you have investigated the matter separately. I noticed it because his description of the origin of the caste system in India was wrong, according to current research.
  
  Harari tries to present himself as outside modern factions (or inter-subjective realities), such as nature vs. nurture, liberalism vs. conservatism, etc. But without conscious explication, he suffuses his book with the assumption that any modern human if taken from birth is equally at home in any of the current or historical inter-subjective realities. He does not propose or even consider experiments to determine culture-vs-genetics. So he proposes this important genetic ability evolved in a small population on a single continent between 130kya and 70kya, but that no differentiating evolution has occurred since then.
  
  The question of whether the degree or style of inter-subjectivity is as universal as he implies is important for several reasons. Harari proposes the world is "different" since 1945, with no war between major powers, no more empires expanding by territorial acquisition. He suggests some reasons for this (cost of nuclear war, for example) which are unverified. His book was completed in 2014 before Russia claimed parts of Ukraine and China claimed the entire South China Sea. If inter-subjective capacity is universal, then this situation is likely unstable. People could quit believing it at any moment, and the world could return to any state that it has been in historically. If inter-subjective capacity is not identical in everyone, then it might make a great deal of difference which cultures dominate, even if through historical accident. See for example Boyd and Richerson 2009 Culture and the Evolution of Human Cooperation.
  
  So, it is a book full of powerful ideas, often with carefully balanced arguments on both sides, but beware of accepting the background assumptions without critical thinking, or you will just fall into the latest meme.
• I bought the book based on high rating but was disappointed. The beginning part was ok but later I felt more and more not reading actual (scientific) facts but only the author's own opinions REPEATEDLY which were presented in a bad way. I tried to continue to finish the book but it was not an easy task. Anyway, not a good book for me,
• If you want to learn about the author's feelings and musings about modern society cloaked in the history of our species, this book is for you. If, however, you, as I did, want to learn something scientific about the progress of our species unspoiled by a political screed, search for something else. Rarely have I felt that I misspent money on a book. In this case, I did. Too bad because it might have been an interesting read. I could go on, but it's not worth more of my time.
• Didn't finish - what starts as interesting history turns quickly into a biased, hateful rant against humanity. Obviously there is room for critique in that regard but that's not why I bought it or what it is promoted as.
• Never before have I reviewed a book after 2300 others have done the same. Who's going to read 2300 reviews and who will read this? Surely a waste of time for a lot of people including me. Now that I am past that let me state that Harari gives a heckeva good read. This is not the usual rise and fall of empires and kingdoms but a broad ranging overview of how we got here. Parts of it were downright fascinating such as "imagination" being a keystone to human activity, e.g. corporations, money, and religion.
  
  Something I found really different and pleasing was his discussion of things where he had no real answer. In the case of all cultures being patriarchal he gives three or four possible reasons. That's good enough for me as there is still no real answer. I find that fair and enlightening. He also does something different as he uses the pronoun "she" throughout the book instead of the previously required male pronoun. Finally he keeps touching on the fact that animals have paid a terrible price for the rise of sapiens. From hunter-gatherer days to the factory farms of today they have suffered. He's right. Incidentally our family has a farm background and I eat no chicken, turkey, pork, or beef. Ever been in a confinement barn?
  
  Now I didn't give the book five stars because he makes positive references to the misguided but widely read Jared Diamond. He borrows a fair amount from Diamond, for example, in that hunter-gatherers were happier than folks today. Let me emphasize that on this snowy March day the cat and I are both glad we don't need to go out and scavenge something off the frozen earth.
  
  Finally, beware of the paper back edition. It has incredibly cheap paper and tiny print. If you purchase the book look for a hard cover. I now consign this review to oblivion. . .still I liked the book.

• Claire Bartlett uses a little-publicized fact of history—Soviet women night flyers who bombed the Nazis in World War II—to create a riveting young adult fantasy novel. The Russian women pilots faced opposition from their own military as well as having to make do with outdated training planes for their missions. Those historical facts are incorporated into this story, which then does its own world-building. A war is on, and the side we’re in has its own oppressions and problems. Magic is readily used on both sides people generate sparks from their hands, for acts as ordinary as lighting cigarettes and as vital as providing the energy needed to run engines and fly planes. There’s a thing called living metal we learn about in the first paragraphs, metal that reacts to human emotion. Another type of magic power, manipulating the Weave, has been forbidden. Yet this power allows one to pilot a plane and the Union is desperate for pilots.
  
  Other reviewers have complained about loose ends, and there are some, but they are the sort to be expected in a novel like this, likely to have a sequel. The major plot lines are resolved. This is a tale of courageous, strong, talented women committed to their work and the war effort and, in the end, each other. No romance. All the male characters are secondary. These are young women learning to believe that they can do anything.

  The Union of the North was at war. Magic was illegal. Linne, daughter of a Union general defied his wishes, dressed as a male and joined the army on the front lines. Seventeen-year-old factory worker Revna was the daughter of a traitor. With her father gone she felt responsible for providing for her mother and sister. When she was caught using magic, she was terrified of being branded a traitor and thrown into prison. Revna and Linne were offered a choice imprisonment or they could join a military flight unit and use the magic of the Weave. The unit was all women; the missions were deadly and always at night. The two young women loath each other but their country and their own life depended on their learning to work as a team. They were determined if they had to share a cockpit as pilot and navigator then they would go down in history as the best.
  I can’t say enough good about this tale. Author Clair Eliza Bartlett has created a world and breathed life into it. The characters in this book have great depth Revna is solid, heroic and strongminded. Her legs are living metal and they interact with the airplane. The magic was superb as was Revna’s living metal legs. Linne’s character grew, developed and matured as the story evolved. The two young women developed a friendship.
  This is science fiction, but it is also loosely based on the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. The courageous women dropped over 23,000 tons of bombs on the Nazi’s. They were nicknamed the Night Witches; they flew only at night and their planes were plywood biplanes. Those daring women faced bullets and freezing temperatures while flying and on the ground, they faced cynicism and sexual harassment. The German’s hated them and feared them. They were a vital Soviet strength in winning WWII.
• "We Rule the Night" is an engaging YA fantasy that takes place in a world at war. Revna works in a factory town, making war machines and related materials. She keeps her head down and follows the rules because her father was branded a traitor and her family status demoted, making their survival less likely. Despite the fact that her father made her legs of living metal, a strong and somewhat sentient substance, most people cannot look past the lack of her natural legs, which were lost in an accident when she was young.
  
  Since then, this disability has inspired her to secretly work with the Weave, a type of forbidden magic that alters the world and can cause tangles which may have far-reaching consequences. When her town is bombed by the Eldans, she uses the Weave to save her life- and that of a Skarov, a type of intelligence officer which is known for extracting confessions with torture, knowing that she is dooming herself to a worse fate for the illegal action. However, instead of condemning her, she is offered a place in a new regiment and that doing so will reinstate her mother and sister's status.
  
  Linne is the daughter of a famous commander in the war. For the last three years, she has posed as the male, Alexei, and fought in the war. Women are not allowed to fight. When she is discovered, they offer her a choice- to join a new fighting group in the war, composed of women and using the illegal Weave. Knowing the other options are worse in her mind, Linne agrees but is unhappy to find the other women in her regiment are not soldiers.
  
  The women train to fly aircraft that is undesirable (the better aircraft goes to the men) and must fight against sexism and sexual harassment at every turn. They are assembled in teams of three, a pilot who manipulates the Weave, the navigator who powers the aircraft with Spark (an acceptable type of magic), and an engineer who works on the weapons and keeps the aircraft running but stays on the ground. Due to the other women's reluctance to work with them (Linne for her personality and Revna for her disability), Linne is the navigator paired with the pilot Revna. Although they detest each other, they hate the idea of not being able to fly. As they begin to fly missions- exciting and terrible- they slowly grow to respect each other.
  
  With twists and turns and all the trappings of a terrible war, this book is about an unlikely friendship and feminism. Between Linne and Revna, we witness many sides of the story and the world they live in. The beginning of the book moves slowly, especially as we piece together all the ways this world is unique and the many characters within it. About halfway through, the pace picks up, and I found myself highly engaged through to the end. It gets pretty dark and the end has a bit of a cliffhanger, as I assume that it will be continued in the next book, but I really enjoyed it overall. It is an emotional and intense read, and I really became enthralled with the two main characters, who are each so strong and unique. I cannot wait to see where this story will go.
  
  This book is unique in so many ways- a world which I have never seen, a lack of romance, and so on. In a highly engaging and original story, these characters completely wormed their way into my heart as they did to each other. I wish I had the next book so I could see where this will go. I highly recommend for lovers of YA fantasy- this is one you will definitely want to pick up!

• In-depth well researched work on a story that everyone living in Colorado in 1960 remembers
  very well. The emotions, and sympathetic connection with the Coors family is very respectful to their pain. Highly recommend to those interested in true crime genre.
• Wonderful account of a terrible tragedy to the Coors family. The book was a true page turner that I couldn't put down. In fact, I read it in two days in spite of a busy schedule.
• It was of some interest, living in the general area of the Kidnapping.
• This is a fascinating and intriguing book! The author did a great job on research and composition, as well to make the story line and characters come to life in my mind. I will always think of this book when I see a Coors beer or advertisement ! Again... great book!
• This book chronicles the attempted kidnapping of Ad Coors III. It is a page turner as well as an excellent character study of the major players in this drama.

• This is not to review the Eddic poems themselves, but Larrington's translation of them. I've given her translation five stars because it is the most accurate complete translation available in English, and as such, along with Ursula Dronke's editions, the only English translation to be recommended as an aid to the student reading the poetic Edda in Old Norse. That being said, while it is the best available, it is still not completely reliable, so be careful. For a proper study of the Poetic Edda you'll need to also consult the glossary of Lafarge and Tucker, the massive Frankfurt commentary (in German), as well as the editions of Jónas and Gísli published in Icelandic.
  
  For the reader not intending to read the Old Norse, I would say any of the translations of the Edda from Larrington, Orchard, Crawford, or Dodd can be recommended, each for different reasons.
• IMO, this is the BEST translation of our lore, free of the "thees and thous" of Shakespearian language present in other translations.
• An excellent translation, which changes just enough to make it digestible to modern English speakers without losing the actual original meanings, as some other translations I've found have done.
• This is an excellent presentation of an ancient myth.
  The translation was readable but still carried through some of the rhythm and power of the original (as much as I can understand without speaking Old Norse).
  Footnotes were frequent and useful without breaking up the flow of the text. I'd recommend this book for the layman and historian alike.
• I am not a Norse scholar, but I loved the rhythm of the Poetic Edda, especially because I had read the Prose Edda first. This sequence allowed me to enjoy the poetry while knowing a tale's trajectory. Sorry if that sounds lazy, but I don't usually read poetry at all, so this still feels like a worthy endeavor to me.
